ISA North Region Cross Country Championships

Well done to the Senior School pupils who competed in the ISA North Region Cross Country Championships on Friday 29th January at King's College, Wirral.

Well done to John and Emma who both came in 5th place, therefore qualifying them both for the National Championships!

A special congratulations to Sarah Collins who won the gold medal for the North East Region U15 ISA Cross Country Championships!

All who took part did exceptionally well and finished in respectable places.

BTEC Science Inspection

We decided to teach the BTEC first in applied science at St. James' as it gave some of our students the opportunity to explore different aspects of science that were not offered on the National curriculum. For example, it gave our students access to the world of forensic science. They could relate this topic to real life situations such as CSI. There were many opportunities to take part in practical activities and to learn valuable skills throughout the course that would prepare the students for life and work when finishing school. The course also gave them the opportunity to higher education at college.

Martin Johnson, Head of science at Saint James school Grimsby

On 26th January 2010 the Science Centre had their BTEC Science Inspection.

St. James' were given an outstanding review and the Managing, Learning and Resources assessments were all deemed to be "performing to standard" and no recommendations were required.

"The Centre has robust quality systems which are appropriate to the size and range of its BTEC delivery. Policies are in place and known and implemented by staff. Policies are available in the staff handbook and are reviewed annually. The staff have close contact with each other across all levels of seniority - both formally and informally."

"The relative smallness of the School and its staff means that learners are strongly supported academically and pastorally. Staff can informally discuss the learners' needs and progress from the basis of close knowledge of them, as well as in regular formal meetings."

St. James' School Crammer Course

The 27th Grimsby Crammer Course, dates are Monday 5th April to Saturday 10th April at

St. James' School, Grimsby. The course offers a unique opportunity for students to experience an intensive period of revision over 6 days, immediately prior to external examinations.

All classes are small and the tutors combine a wealth of experience and expertise with great enthusiasm.

Many have been with the course from the start. Some come from the local area but others are recruited from other parts of the country.

The course gives the student a boost at the right time, with many reporting an increase in confidence and subsequently a higher pass rate.

Inter-House Swimming Gala 2010

A well contested Swimming Gala was held between years 5, 6, 7 & 8 on Friday 15th January, at Scartho Baths. The eventual winners were Walkerly House, closely followed by Lindsey House and Blakeney House came in third.
Congratulations to all who took part and made this event a thoroughly enjoyable occasion.
A special mention to Hannah Woods and Robert Bulcock who were best overall girl and boy on the day, and also to Moby Mahmood, in year 6, who received the Shotton Trophy for most improved swimmer.
Mr Parsons

Lindsey House came 2nd in the Swimming Gala. We had a very well organised team and everyone tried their best. We would like to congratulate all the students that took part. Well done!
Hannah Woods & Callan Postma (Lindsey House, Year 8)

All 3 teams; Blakeney, Walkerly and Lindsey, took off to a brilliant start at the years 5, 6, 7 & 8 Swimming Gala. All Houses were persistent and wanted to win, but it was Walkerly who took an astonishing lead after just twenty minutes. This didn't mark the end just yet though. At the half way mark it was neck and neck between Walkerly and Blakeney, with Lindsey closing in.
Just before the relay races all teams were very close, with just 8 points between 1st and 3rd place. The relay races were very exciting and everyone gave it their all, but it was Walkerly house who managed to come in 1st place, with Lindsey House in 2nd and Blakeney House in 3rd place.
John Collins (Blakeney House,Year 8)

Starlincs Planetarium visits Prep School

StarLincs, Lincolnshire's only mobile Planetarium, visited the Prep School this January, bringing an exciting visual display of the night sky into school.

The Planetarium, a self contained darkened classroom, provided intensive study sessions without distraction. The presentation was led by an experienced teacher who led all the children on to a journey into space.

Children from Prep 5 and 6 got to visit the Planetarium and they thoroughly enjoyed it!

The representative from the Planetarium said he was delighted with the children's knowledge of the universe!

North Region ISA 5-a-side Football Championships, 2009

Having been postponed due to snow the previous week, the championships finally got under way on Monday 9th January, at St James' School, Grimsby.

Nine teams battled through tricky driving conditions from as far and wide as Sunderland (Argyle House) and Ormskirk (Kingswood College) and were rewarded with clear blue skies and pitches in good condition for football. They were split into two round-robin groups of 4 and 5 teams, respectively, with the two top teams qualifying for semi-finals.

The standard of play was high and made for two extremely closely contested semi-finals. In the end, St James' School overcame Hill House School (Doncaster) 2 - 1, whilst Firwood Manor (Oldham) beat Kingswood College 1- 0 but after the game had gone to extra-time.

Hill House School won the 3rd/4th play-off whilst, in a thrilling end to end final, St James' School defeated Firwood Manor 2 - 0, to make it a hat-trick of wins in this competition.

The four semi-finalists will represent the North Region in the ISA Nationals, in March. Good luck boys!
