Music at St. James':

March 2008: An update from the Music Department

St. James' School has a long and proud tradition of musical excellence. Music is at the very heart of day to day life at St. James', and as such all pupils from Nursery age up to and including Year 9 receive two class lessons in the subject each week.

Those pupils who show enthusiasm or a particular aptitude for the subject are encouraged to learn a musical instrument. A well qualified and dedicated team of peripatetic teachers come into school on a weekly basis to provide tuition on a wide range of instruments. Approximately 25% of pupils at St. James' learn a musical instrument in school.

Extra curricular musical activities thrive at St. James' where pupils are encouraged to join the Orchestra, one of numerous choirs or instrumental groups that exist. A regular programme of concerts are held throughout the year both within school and out in the local community in order to provide pupils with valuable performance experience.

The Choral Tradition at St. James'

St. James' School, Grimsby, was founded in 1880 by Canon James Peter Young as a school which could provide choristers for the local Parish Church, St. James.
Since that time, generations of Choir boys have been educated at the school and sung Evensongs and Sunday services at St. James' together with enriching Wedding and Funeral services. It is a unique experience, providing boys with a discipline and professional approach to beautiful music.
St. James' is still the Choir School of Grimsby Parish Church and the Church is unique as in that it is the only Parish Church in Great Britain to have its own Choir School. Click here to learn more about how you could become a St. James' Chorister

The Academy Girls' Choir

This choir was established in 2002 with the sole aim of allowing girls who show particular promise vocally, the chance to experience and explore at first hand a variety of music from the English Choral Tradition. The choir rehearses twice a week before lessons and aims to perform both in school and at churches in the locality.

There are various bursaries available to both boys and girls who become Choristers or Girls' Choir. PLease enquire for more details.
