 About our School : Boarding

St. James' School is a small intimate school with two boarding houses on site. Click here to view our recent Ofsted Inspection, where the overall rating of our boarding facilities and care for our children was OUTSTANDING!!

The School is situated near the town centre of Grimsby. It is within a short walk of People's Park, Weelsby Woods and the shopping centre, with a short bus ride to take you to the Leisure Centre, swimming pool, cinema and the local resort of Cleethorpes with its beaches, shops, laser quest, leisure centre, theme park, ten pin bowling and new nine screen cinema. Mr Hampson, Director of Community Outreach, also likes to take the boarders on a termly trip to Manchester City to watch they play. Click here to see the photos of the last trip.

Bedrooms and Common Rooms in the two houses are homely and comfortable. There is an annual redecoration programme for the continuous improvement of both houses. Younger boarders are accomodated in close proximity of the boarding house parents, whilst all the Sixth Formers have individual rooms and Head's of House  have en-suite bathrooms (Subject to availability).

The food is excellent, varied and plentiful. We know that nothing will ever replace home, but we endeavour to create a happy and caring environment where pupils can live contentedly.

The House Parents are available at all times to provide the emotional and academic support needed by children away from home. They ensure that children maintain regular contact with their families. There is easy access to telephones in both houses plus internet access at all times (either using personal laptops or the computers provided in the boarding houses). Trips and activities are always taking place at weekends (eg: Cinema, Swimming, ice skating, shopping trips to York, quad biking and many more). There is free time in the evenings when the supervised homework has been completed.

Boarding pupils whose parents live abroad are given considerable help with their flight arrangements and are personally escorted to the airport by school-approved transport. St. James' staff also spend a considerable amount of time arranging guardian families for our International Students during exeat weekends and half term breaks. Our guardian families are thoroughly checked for their suitability, most are families and friends of St. James' and many have been guardians for many years.

House Master of Petchell House

Hello, my name is Kevin Cooper and I have been the Housemaster of Petchell House since September 2009. I am married to Hilary Cooper, who is teaching English in the senior school at St James, I will be teaching Geography and I am also hoping to be coaching Rugby. Hilary and I have twin 8-year-old daughters, Rebekah and Naomi, who both attend the prep school.

Before St. James', we ran a boarding house at a school in Hampshire for a number of years. We had about 100 boys and girls(!), so it is great to have a smaller house at St James as this allows us to really get to know the boys well, and develop a real 'family atmosphere'.

I find St James a wonderful place to live and work. We have students here from a wide range of social backgrounds and, at the last count, we had 12 countries and 4 continents represented. Boarding can help children develop independence and a sense of responsibility but I assure you, fun is high on the agenda also as we run regular trips and activities throughout the year

House Mistress of Yarborough House

Hello, my name is Liz Champion and I am writing to welcome you to our 'Yarborough House Family'.

The Girl's Boarding House is called 'Yarborough House'. We have three members of staff, I work Monday to Friday and Ms Morey and Ms Campbell work during the weekend.

Please feel reassured that we will endeavour to encourage students to prepare for their academic and social well being; during their time at Saint James' School. Boarding gives an individual the experience to deal with many social challenges and allows them to learn in the boarding community how to become an individual in the wider world.

Our age range is from 7 years to 18 years and it is always amazing to see how much our students thrive in all aspects of school/boarding life.

We always like to encourage parents to either telephone or email to enable us to build a relationship with you as parents and to support us in the welfare of your child. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries, even if they appear small. We are here to help.

Our students welcome contact via email or telephone which enables friendships to be formed, prior to arrival. This ensures peace of mind for both students and parents alike leaving you feeling secure in the knowledge that you will already have built up relationships and will be looking forward to meeting the students you have been in contact with.

Both Boarding Houses have a warm, family atmosphere. This is one of the many attributes our school excels in and is commented on, frequently. All age ranges interact with each other, be it with homework, sports, or socially.

We do hope you have enjoyed reading about Yarborough House and we look forward to meeting you.

Flexible Boarding

Flexi-boarding is also offered, which can prove a boon to parents dealing with illness or temporary family difficulties, as well as giving the child a sense of security at a difficult time.
