Dedication to work is the fountain of learning

 Sports and Music

Music

Music is at the heart of St. James’ School and is a focal point for a great many pupils and students. Each year, a growing number of pupils will take up an instrument, join the orchestra, attend singing lessons or sing in one of the many choirs (Chamber Choir, Girls’ Choir and Girls’ Academy Choir).

Sixth Form students form an integral part of the various choirs and the orchestra and many continue the learning of an instrument throughout their A Levels (Universities today recognise the value of music, and grades obtained from Level 5 can be transferred into UCAS points).

Each academic year, two examination sessions are held (in December and in June) and students pride themselves on attaining exceptional results.

Sport

Our School has a firm commitment towards sports and our Sixth Form timetables all include a weekly sports session. Emphasis is placed upon traditional team sports such as football, cricket, netball, hockey, athletics and tennis. All these enable students to develop individual skills as well as team loyalties. Our football and tennis teams are a particular pride in the School and we take part and hold a number of matches and tournaments.

As part of our link with Grimsby College, students have access to the College’s fitness suite before and after school, and or at weekends, all at a reduced rate.

House Events

All students are placed into one of our three Houses and they remain in that House for the duration of their school life.

During the course of an academic year, a range of events such as the Swimming Gala, the Public Speaking Day, the Music and Arts Festival, the Maths Challenge, etc, offer wider opportunities to everyone to build  their existing skills or discover new skills.

Many Inter-House sporting activities are regularly organised, giving further opportunities for everyone to consolidate their sporting skills.
